    Optional Subjects

    Preliminary Examination: Electrical Engineering

    Main Examination:
Optional Subject 1 - Electrical Engineering
    Optional Subject 2 - Mathematics

Being my own subject in B.E. and M.E., electrical Engineering was an obvious choice. I picked up this as optional despite of not very encouraging past record in Civil Service Examination.

I am good at Mathematics and being a pure science subject, it has very good potential for scoring very high marks. Availability of good books and study-material also helped.

    Success Plan

Since childhood, I have been among top ranker; ranked 1st in ECET 1998, GATE – 3rd rank, IES 2003 – 1st rank so, I was always hopeful to get top ranks in Civil Service Examination.

Toppers are also like common students but some extra efforts help them achieve top ranks.

    Number of attempts
This was my 3rd attempt. In my first attempt, as I was engaged in M.E, I could get barely two months time to prepare. Even though, I reached Interview stage but, could not find place in the merit list.

In next attempt, I neglected my health and that cost me deadly in Mathematics Paper. Still, I managed to get through and got 223rd rank (IPS Post).

    Time Management
The syllabus of Electrical Engineering optional subject is so vast and the pattern of question papers has made it tougher in recent years. To fetch good marks, one has to read/cover the complete syllabus. I faced problem in preparing Electrical Engineering optional.

In CSE 2007, Electrical Engineering Paper I had 40 pages. It requires a lot of practice to cover even 200 marks in this optional.

To face it effectively, prepared short notes on each topic and revised thoroughly once a week. This helped me perform well in the examination.

Extensive wide coverage. It requires at least 4 months preparation.

Concentrate more on Modern India, Geography, Polity, India Year-Book, current affairs especially the Hindu paper.

For an effective preparation, devoted 35% time to General Studies preparation and rest for both optional subjects.

Made self notes on current affairs after reading newspapers. The Hindu, Frontline, Yojna are useful resource for current affairs coverage. Aimed to cover the complete preparation by July end and kept month of August and September for extensive practice. Test-series were also useful.

Having good roommates/friends is of great help. We prepared a list of probable questions and practiced them.

For Essay, we analyzed the current affairs and selected about 6 topics that included the Indo-US Nuclear deal and practiced a lot.

Since, one of the topic was about importance of Indo-US Nuclear deal, I picked up the same and wrote an effective essay.

Concentrated on Bio-Data, current affairs, optional subjects and hobbies. Being truthful and cool during interview helps. Have faith in the interview board.

Since I was undergoing IPS training at NPA, Hyderabad, I didn’t had much of time to prepare for interview. I just brushed up my current affairs, Bio-Data and some facts relating to my IPS training.

I was interview by Mr. Subir Dutta board on 17th April, 2007.

    Interview Questions

Some of the important questions asked during interview were about RTI Act, Police training at NPA, Hyderabad, IISC, relating to Mathematics and hobbies etc.
