“It is a dream come true and when I got the news, the first reaction was - is it a joke or something and checked the result again to believe it” said Durishetty Anudeep (AIR 1; CSE 2017).

Earlier, Anudeep had achieved success in his second attempt (AIR 790; CSE 2013) and got Indian Revenue Services. He is presently in services and posted at Hyderabad as Assistant Commissioner.

As my eyes were set on post of ‘IAS’, my struggle continued; but, preparing for Civil Services Examination with job is really difficult; but, I somehow managed my preparation as and when I could squeeze time in the evenings and on weekends.

Revealing the career progression path he took, Anudeep said, “It has been a long journey that commenced with brief stint with Google to career in ‘Civil Services’. Although initially I had thought it will be 2-3 attempts to accomplish the task; but, as the luck would have been, I took 5 attempts to reach the final destination.”

When I started the conversation with him, my first question was Anthropology as optional subject; Why? Explaining the rationale he said, “In my earlier 4 attempts, my optional was Public Administration. In fact, my first attempt was with the previous pattern where there were 2 optional, so I had Public Administration and Geography; but, when the pattern changed I dropped Geography.

For this attempt, there were two reasons for changing optional subject; One. I was getting consistently poor marks in Public Administration and Second. I was really bored with Public Administration. With not much time available for preparation, I looked at Anthropology, a subject of my interest and seemed manageable within limited time.”

My next question, wasn’t it difficult to prepare Anthropology, a new subject for you? Not at all, was his instant reaction; in fact I prepared my optional of my own. There are many standard text books like Ember & Ember, Nadeem Husnain and lot of coaching useful stuff available in market.

Candidly acknowledging the role of his family he said, “I am fortunate to have parents who fully supported my decision and I could continue my flight with their encouragement and support.”

He has secured 1126 marks (Main Examination Written -950, Personality Test – 176) out of total 2025 marks in Civil Services Examination 2017 to clinch the top most rank.
