Each stage of the Civil Services Examination has its own importance and your performance help you in accomplishing the goal you have set for yourself.
It is always recommended that a brilliant show in Main Examination (Written) helps you in your end result.
It is not that getting high marks is difficult in interview; candidates are getting decent marks; but, there is lot of variation in score and uncertainty about your performance in interview can make or break your fortunes.
The following table gives you fair idea about top 25 ranker’s performance. 1st rank Durishetty Anudeep secured 1126 marks out of total 2025 marks.
2nd rank Anu Kumari got 1124 marks and 3rd Rank Sachin Gupta got 1122 marks.
The variance occurred with Main Examination marks made huge difference in fate of candidates and good aggregate in Main (Written) Examination ensures success as well as help in grabbing top spot.
Look at the brilliant score Pratham Kaushik (AIR 5; CSE 2017) as he got 974 marks in written. Despite below average marks in Personality Test (143 Marks) he secured 5th rank. He got 24 more marks in written than 1st rank Anudeep; but, Personality Test marks made all the difference.

As the data reflect, AIR 19 Abhijeet Sinha got really high marks (201 Marks) in Personality Test and ensured his place in top 20 ranks.
Another similar case where Marks secured in Main Written by AIR 25 Saad Miya Khan are much less; but, his Personality Test (193 marks) saw him occupy high rank.
Despite only one mark difference in Main Examination marks between Abhijeet Sinha (AIR 19; CSE 2017) and Saad Miya Khan (AIR 25; CSE 2017), divergence in Personality Marks made variation of 6 ranks.

There is a difference of only 49 marks between ranks 1st and 25th; that goes on to show how keenly contested Civil Services Examination 2017 had been.
If you compare it with CSE 2015 result, there was a difference of 45 marks between Rank 1 Tina Dabi and Rank 2 Athar Aamir. The difference in marks at top had been huge in CSE 2012 and there was 128 marks difference in 1st and 25th rank candidate.
