The Interview Board consists of competent and unbiased observers who have before them a record of candidate’s career.
Their purpose is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service.
The test is intended to judge the mental calibre of a candidate.
The prime aim of the interview board is to create such an atmosphere where the candidates can perform confidently and enactment reflects originality.
The instructions laid down by UPSC clearly mentions, “The candidate will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his/her career. He/she will be asked questions on matters of general interest. The object of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers.”
By identifying relevant skills and abilities, the Interview Board catch the facts and behaviour to access the personality.
As it is observed, generally your interview starts with innocuous questions based on information you fill in your Detailed Application Form (DAF) and that is the reason it is always crucial to remain careful while filling the Main Examination Detailed Application Form.

It could be you name, father’s name, date of birth, place of birth, family background, Educational Background, subjects, any achievements, work experience (if working), gap between academic studies and examination, hobbies and areas of interest, Service Preference, Cadre preference etc.
You are asked many a questions that prove your knowledge and awareness about current affairs and contemporary developments.
During the interview, sometimes tricky questions are thrown at you just to rattle you. Such questions are meant to observe your behaviour and reaction you illustrate under pressure. This phase of interview is really important and a balanced approach with cool-headed response will help you to win their hearts.
The Interview Board expects originality, to the point clear-cut answer and a concise and complete reply.
