Why some candidates shy away from the Preliminary Examination?

Preliminary Examination apparently is a screening test; but, candidates encounter stiff competition at this level. If you look at table, you will notice that in last 2-3 years, the number of candidates appeared in Preliminary Examination has gone up thus making it more challenging.

As a matter of fact, a large number of candidates just apply for the examination without considering the details.

It is difficult to pinpoint the rationale behind such occurrences; still, the key reason is many non-serious candidates fill up the application form for Prelims every year thus making a crowd.

On other hand, to be on safer side, many candidates fill 2-3 forms to cover any mistake/choice of centre etc.

Some of the applicants surround themselves with a lot of apprehensions hence change their mind to appear in Preliminary Examination. Such candidates do not appear in examination due to preparation related worries as after appearing in Preliminary Examination, one attempt is counted.
