Preparation for General Studies is the major area for which many candidates depend on coaching institutes. Responding to the needs, a lot of coaching institutes offer specialized coaching for General Studies, particularly for Main Examination.
But, a glance at the successful candidates’ recent performance presents a very dull picture and marks secured in General Studies illustrates a truly ordinary performance. I think that in past two-three years, the average marks secured by candidates would have been near 225-230 out of 600 with gradual decline each passing year. In most of the cases, their success depended mainly on optional subjects and performance in other areas.
These trends raise a serious question “are the coaching institutes playing any role in General Studies preparation?”
In the new environment, this question gains more prominence as General Studies now, has the maximum weightage. It would be a difficult for candidates to spot the right coaching institute that can address the emerging needed.
Getting a satisfactory answer for this query is difficult and for candidates, it is going to be a big puzzle to make the accurate decision about coaching institutes.
I feel the problem can be explained in two ways;
1. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has repeatedly showed concern about the role of coaching institutes and to select the talented and capable candidates, every year question papers have some surprise element that raise problems for coaching institutes to encounter such frequent change.
The recent changes for Main Examination can be seen in this direction only where UPSC desire to cut the role of coaching institutes and would succeed in some way by reducing the role of optional subjects. For General Studies, as such there is not much that infuses some hope as Coaching Institutes are proving unproductive.
2. Probably, it is all about delivery. I accept that some of the leading coaching institutes make herculean efforts to adept to emerging requirements but, it is quite challenging to equip candidates with basic understanding and complete clarity about the issues.
It is practically impossible for any coaching institute to touch each and every event, development but, certainly it is possible to train the candidates to work out answers based on general intelligence and awareness. However, to touch each and every candidate in big batches of 250-300 students, it is practically impossible.
If coaching institute adopt discussion-based methods which make them comprehend the questions correctly and make them capable of giving logical answers based on even limited information.
Candidates’ interests should always be on top
The question is not about the quality but about the delivery that is coaching institute’s responsibility.
If students’ interest is kept in mind and institutes have smaller batches, there can be a solution as each candidate can get attention and care they need. By doing this, each and every student’s progress can be analyzed and the faculty would be aware of each student’s weakness and strengths; thus, would be in a better position to offer solutions.
It is possible that some of my friends in coaching institutes may or may not agree with me but, the fact is that coaching industry needs fresh perspective and completely new approach. This is need of the hour as well; to counter the challenges new scheme for Main Examination throws, innovative way outs, spanking preparation methods have to be devised.
It is certain that many people within coaching fraternity, who understand Civil Services Examination related intricacies, would come with impeccable solutions that make candidates preparation simple.
