Mains 2012: give more preference to Reality than Perception

In Civil Services Examination, perception is a strong pointer and a lot of candidates get influenced and take decisions which may or may not suit them. These decisions may relate to their optional subject choice, coaching institute they join, books they read…

This particular subject is scoring…it is very difficult to score in particular subject…this does not contribute to success…this subject makes a better combination with particular subject…this institute produces toppers…this institute is famous for this particular optional subject…this subject has a shorter syllabus… this subject is manageable within limit period…this subject has very high success rate…this has a very low success rate…

A lot happens here on perception and if there is not a known teacher for a particular subject, there are no takers. If there is no result in top 25 or say 100 ranks for a particular subject, the subject is considered doomed. If there is no topper among toppers belonging to a particular coaching institute, how-so-ever good the reputation is; coaching institute is downgraded overnight as if the quality has gone down drastically in recent past.

What is this all; at least I don’t understand. It is not the subject but the candidates picking that subject and producing outstanding performance make the reason for selection.

Look at the emerging trends, candidates have shown good results with offbeat subject combinations and have achieved higher ranks.
