As the drift towards humanities subjects continue in Civil Services (Main) Examination, most of the candidates rely upon the safe optional subjects. A combination of optional subject like Public Administration, Geography, Sociology, History, Psychology, Political Science & International Relations, Philosophy and Anthropology figure in the top most pair of optional subject successful candidates picked.

Selecting the right set of optional subjects that ensures success is a difficult task. Many candidates like S Divyadharshini (AIR 1, CSE 2010) achieved success with Public Administration and an offbeat subject Law. Last year, Shah Faesal (AIR 1, CSE 2009) had Public Administration and Literature of Urdu Language.

So, it is not that only popular combinations only produce top results, it can be any subject combination and the above instances support these arguments strongly.

It is not that the choice you made is right. There are many instances where candidates changed one subject which helped them succeed and get higher ranks. Akhand Pratap Singh (AIR 10, CSE 2009) changed Philosophy with Literature of Hindi Language. Ruchika Diwakar (AIR 50, CSE 2010) changed Geography with Philosophy; Kunal Silku (AIR 65, CSE 2010) in his third attempt changed Mathematics with Philosophy which worked for him.
