PMI index northbound in January 2011

The manufacturing sector expanded at a slightly faster pace in January 2011 on the back of output and new order growth but inflationary pressures persisted, a business survey released on February 1, 2011 showed.

The HSBC Markit Purchasing Managers' Index, based on a survey of around 500 companies, edged up to 56.8 in January from 56.7 in December.

That was the 22nd consecutive month the key index of manufacturing has been above the reading of 50 that divides growth from contraction.
